Monofocal lenses: clear vision at one distance, proven technology
A monofocal intraocular lens corrects vision clearly at a single distance — usually far — and is the most established lens design used in cataract and lens exchange surgery.
What is a monofocal lens?
A monofocal lens is an artificial lens with one fixed focus point, most often set for distance vision. Unlike trifocal or EDoF lenses, it does not split or extend focus across multiple distances — which means reading glasses are typically still needed for near tasks like reading or using a phone.
This isn't a limitation so much as a trade-off: monofocal lenses have the longest track record of any intraocular lens design and produce the sharpest, most predictable vision at the one distance they're set for.

Why choose a monofocal lens?
Sharpest single-distance vision
No light is split between multiple focus points, so distance vision is typically at its clearest.
Lowest likelihood of halos or glare
Because focus isn't divided, night driving and low-light vision are usually more comfortable.
The most established design
Decades of use in cataract surgery worldwide, with a long track record of predictable outcomes.
Available from ZEISS and Alcon
Both manufacturers offer monofocal designs, matched to your eye measurements.
Who is it for?
Monofocal lenses are typically recommended when your priority is sharp distance vision, when you're comfortable using reading glasses for near tasks, or when your eye's anatomy makes multifocal or EDoF lens designs less suitable. This is confirmed during your eye exam.
