    Lens Exchange (RLE)

Refractive Lens Exchange with premium ZEISS and Alcon lenses — clear vision at every distance without reading glasses

    What is Refractive Lens Exchange?

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) replaces your eye's natural lens with a premium artificial intraocular lens from world-leading manufacturers. It is the treatment of choice from around 45–50 years of age, when the natural lens loses flexibility and reading glasses become unavoidable.

A trifocal or extended-depth-of-focus (EDoF) lens restores near, intermediate and distance vision in a single procedure and corrects high hyperopia or myopia. If astigmatism is also present, a toric version of the lens corrects it at the same time — so no separate procedure is needed. RLE also rules out cataract for life: the replaced lens can never become cloudy again.

    Why choose Refractive Lens Exchange?

    Vision at every distance

Trifocal lenses give you near, intermediate and distance vision without depending on reading glasses.

    Cataract will never develop

The natural lens is replaced, so you will never need cataract surgery in the future.

    Premium lenses

The lens is chosen and calculated individually from your own eye measurements.

    A stable, lasting result

The implanted lens does not age or change, so the correction stays stable for life.

How does Lens Exchange (RLE) work?

How is Refractive Lens Exchange performed?

A short, painless 10 minutes procedure with the lens calculated from your own measurements.

    01

    Full diagnostics

We measure the eye's biometry to calculate the exact lens power for your vision.

    02

    Choosing the lens

Together we select a monofocal, trifocal, EDoF or toric lenses from world-leading manufacturers that suits your lifestyle.

    03

    Anesthetic drops

Only anesthetic drops are used — no injections and no general anesthesia.

    04

    Lens exchange

Through a micro-incision the natural lens is removed and the new lens is placed in its position.

    05

    Recovery

Vision becomes clearer within hours and most patients return to everyday activities the next day.

    Frequently asked questions

    We answer your questions

Considering Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)? Please find the FAQs below. If you can not find the answer to your question, do not hesitate to contact us.

Due to natural ageing processes, the lens in the eye gradually loses its elasticity and the eye’s accommodative function weakens – the ability to see clearly at all distances. Distance vision remains unchanged, but we begin to see poorly up close. Around the age of 40–45, the nearest clear vision point has receded so much that it becomes difficult to read, write or perform fine tasks at a normal distance.

Distance vision usually remains unchanged, but near vision gradually worsens, making it difficult to read or perform fine tasks at close range.

No, it is not a disease. It is a natural physiological process in which the lens loses elasticity and can no longer change its curvature. As a result, the eye fails to focus on nearby small objects and the image becomes blurred and unclear.

Unfortunately, no. It is an inevitable part of age-related changes. However, it can be effectively corrected with various methods – glasses, contact lenses, laser presbyopia correction with the PRESBYOND® method, or refractive lens exchange surgery.

The procedures are technically very similar, but they differ in who they are suitable for and the results achieved. The PRESBYOND® method is explicitly designed for patients with presbyopia and restores functional vision at all distances.

Yes, if you are otherwise eligible. Usual laser eye surgery (SURFACE, FS‑LASIK, SMILE PRO) restores good distance vision without glasses, but presbyopia symptoms will remain, meaning reading glasses may still be needed. For complete correction at all distances, PRESBYOND® or lens replacement is more suitable.

The most appropriate correction method will be recommended by the specialist after a thorough eye examination.

If glasses or contact lenses become inconvenient, reduce your quality of life, or you want a long-term, comfortable solution.

Yes. Modern techniques allow simultaneous correction of several refractive errors, improving vision at all distances.

It depends on the chosen procedure. Most patients return to daily activities within a few days to weeks.
